Steering column Trouble Empty
PostSubject: Steering column Trouble   Steering column Trouble EmptySun 3 May - 12:47

Well I did it, I purchased a 70 428cj yesterday after I promised myself that I would not work on big block cars anymore. I guess I figured just one more. It is a great car, in need or a restore, but everything is there right down to the original exhaust. This will be a fun project.

I have an issue with my steering column, my key won't come out. Is there a trick or something that I am not aware of to get the key to release? Thanks for your help.

I'm sure you've tried this but turn the key through all the positions (except start) and try removing it each time. Also wiggle the locked steering wheel, sometimes that will cause the key to stick if it against a curb.

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested, but no luck. The wheel never locks because I can't get the key to the final position where the wheel would lock. I guess I am going to have to take the wheel off and see if something looks out of place. I guess the real issue is I can't get the key to the beginning position in order to remove it. Tim

Well I have learned a few things about this car. There is a feature that I was not aware of on this car. The Hurst shifter needs to be in Reverse and push up into reverse before the key can be turned and removed. This also locks the shifter into place and cannot be moved from reverse until the key is inserted into the column and turned to the number one postion. Problem solved. Thanks.

Your correct that's because there should be a shifter rod/linkage from bottom of steering column to the hurst shifter.
